Connecticut Open House Day on Saturday, June 9th 2018
at the Museum on the Greene, 1944 Main Street, Glastonbury

As part of the 14th Annual Connecticut Open House Day, the Historical Society of Glastonbury’s (HSG) Museum on the Green will be open on Saturday, June 9th between the hours of 12:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.
This is a chance for residents of Glastonbury and across Connecticut to see Glastonbury’s first town meeting house. Built in 1840, the brick building on Hubbard Green is now home to the HSG and its Museum on Green. Guests are welcome to take a self-guided tour of the Green Cemetery adjacent to the museum and/or a self-guided walking tour of the trees along Main Street.
Glastonbury’s first meeting house stood on what is now Hubbard Green and functioned as both church and Town House. It has been said that the museum was built of ballast bricks, possibly from North Africa. Because there were several brickyards in Glastonbury at the time, this may not be the case. The adjacent Green Cemetery is from the church. The first school was also located on the green. Livestock grazed on the green and the Militia practiced here. There even was a pig pound on the edge of the green, whose purpose was to keep pigs from damaging the crops.
Permanent displays at the museum include ones on Glastonbury’s Native Americans, its Colonial Era, the famous Smith Sisters (abolitionists & suffragists), the Civil War, Hale Farm, and prominent local industries such as shipbuilding, soapmaking (the J. B. Williams Co). and the Harriman Motor Company, which built airplanes in the early 20th century.
The museum and property being open to the public on Saturday, June 9th is part of the CT Office of Tourism’s’ (a division of the Department of Economic & Community Development) annual one-day statewide event designed to showcase Connecticut’s diverse world of history, art, and tourism. This is a great opportunity for residents to discover or rediscover Connecticut history.
The Museum on the Green is located at 1944 Main Street (corner of Main and Hubbard Streets) Glastonbury, CT 06033. The Museum is open Monday, Tuesday and Thursday 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. and the third Sunday of every month from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Admission is always FREE. Donations are always welcome.
