Docents needed for school tours and public events at the Welles-Shipman-Ward House
The Historical Society always welcomes people to join our fantastic team of docents. There are a variety of opportunities for you to assist us in educating the public about Glastonbury’s rich history. One of the major ways docents help us is by assisting in two fifth grade tours which directly connect to our district’s social studies curriculum of American History. In the fall, all the classes visit our 1755 river valley mansion, the Welles-Shipman-Ward House where students are involved with hands-on activities in the house and the barns. In the spring, there is a culminating field trip to the museum and a tour of Green Cemetery where students visit the gravesites of a dozen Glastonbury men and women whom they have learned about during the year. The students are very engaged in these trips, writing year after year that they are favorite trips. They are very rewarding experiences for the docents.
Docents are also involved with events during the year at the Welles-Shipman-Ward House, or on our open house at WSW during Tuesday afternoons. We need guides in the house and barns to provide information about this beautiful property to our visitors and explain the colonial way of life in Glastonbury.
Training will be provided so you can feel comfortable and confident. There is great flexibility choosing when and where you would like to volunteer. Our docent group is outstanding! They are knowledgeable, passionate about their love of our history, and are friendly and welcoming. Be a part of making history come alive and have fun doing it. Period clothing available to wear, but it is not required.

The Society needs people to research the dates and original builders of homes in Glastonbury for those purchasing plaques for their historic homes. Training will be provided. Anyone interested please call Jim at 860-633-6890.
Museum on the Green - Sundays:
Because so many people who want to visit the Museum on the Green either work or go to school during our regular hours Monday & Thursday 9 AM – 4 PM we open the Museum the third Sunday of each month, from 1:00- 4:00 PM. We already have some excellent volunteers for these openings but we need more. Anyone interested in manning the Museum on the Sundays mentioned please call Jim at the Museum 860-633-6890.
Library: The Museum Library has data entry needs for cataloging our collections into a database known as "PastPerfect". We will teach you the system. It is easy, and this process enables students, family genealogists, researchers and the history loving public access our collections (objects, books, manuscripts, maps etc.).
